About Last Night Is A Must See! [Review]

About Last Night is a romantic comedy opening February 14, 2014.

Directed by Steve Pink (Hot Tub Machine) and written by Leslye Headlands. This remake stars Kevin Hart (Bernie), Michael Ealy (Danny), Regina Hall  (Joan)and Joy Bryant (Debbie).

Set in Chicago, this film is based in the 1986 film starring Rob Lowe and Demi Moore.

This classic 80’s romantic dramedy is one of my favorite early Demi movies. I will admit I was not very optimistic at the idea of this remake, although I like the actors involved. I can be prejudiced against remakes.

The official website’s synopsis is ” A modern reimagining of the classic romantic comedy, this contemporary version closely follows new love for two couples as they journey from the bar to bedroom and are eventually put to test in the real world.”

My synopsis: absolutely hysterically rolling in the aisles funny.

The About Last Night remake closely follows the relationship of Deb and Danny. Bernie and Joan’s relationship is followed a bit more superficially.

Most of the plot and story line mimic the original, but actors do a great job making the characters their own. Ealy definitely holds his own with Rob Lowe. He has that sad, soulful look down to a science. It was difficult to compare Moore’s Debbie with the current, because Demi shines in the original, but Joy Bryant played the part well. I will say that their love story wasn’t as compelling as I thought it should be though.

In the original film, James Belushi and Elizabeth Perkins as Bernie and Joan are funny and charming distractions from the “main story line”. In this version, Kevin Hart and Regina Hall are a comedic powerhouse couple. Their timing is perfect and their chemistry is off the charts.

Bernie and Joan aren’t just supporting characters in the remake. If Debbie and Danny are the heart of the movie, Bernie and Joan are the soul. In my opinion, Hart and Hall’s performances alone are reason to see this movie.

Debbie and Danny pay homage to the original in one scene that fans of the original won’t want to miss.

This is a great date night, girls’ night or anybody any night movie. You will laugh, a lot and you get to look at Micheal Ealy. What else does a movie need?
