Alfonso Cuaron Won’t Direct Harry Potter Spinoff

In somewhat surprising news, it seems that Alfonso Cuaron won’t be directing the Harry Potter spinoff: Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, despite much speculation that he would.

Earlier this month, Fantastic Beasts was given a release date of November 18, 2016, and in past interviews Cuaron has talked about what a fun project Fantastic Beasts would be to direct after directing Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

However, Cuaron has made some recent comments that indicate he won’t be attached to that project or any other, saying “I’m once again connecting with life,” adding “I have no plans of any kind.”

In addition to taking some time off, Cuaron also says he wants to steer clear of special effects for the time being after he took special effects to a whole new level with last year’s Oscar-winning Gravity.

Cuaron said, “I’m coming out of a five-year process of doing visual effects, and now I sort of want to clean my palate of that a little bit.”

As mentioned, Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them isn’t scheduled to come out until November 2016, so there is plenty of time for Warner Bros. to find a director, knowing it won’t be Cuaron.
