Amazon announced today that it is producing a new series pilot of Zombieland, based on the Columbia Pictures 2009 film of the same title starring Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg, about four survivors in a zombie-infested world in search of a new home.
Zombieland will be the seventh comedy pilot in the Amazon Prime Instant Video catalog.
There are 13 series pilots which customers will vote on to determine which series will be made into a full season by Amazon Studios.
Based on Hollywood’s fascination with everything zombie, Zombieland could prove a successful venture for Amazon if selected.
“Zombieland is a fan favorite and we can’t wait to see where this story line goes in a serialized format,” said Roy Price, Director of Amazon Studios. “We’ve been announcing a lot of exciting exclusive content for Prime Instant Video, like Downton Abbey, Under the Dome, and Justified, and we think adding original shows to that lineup is going to make Prime even more enticing for customers.”
The Zombieland pilot will star Tyler Ross as Columbus, Izabela Vidovic as Little Rock, Maiara Walsh as Wichita, and Kirk Ward as the Twinkie-fiending zombie-slayer, Tallahassee.
Show creator, Paul Wernick, said “Zombieland will strive to break the rules—action, adventure, thrills, chills and laughs and all packed into a half hour format.”
Zombieland was wildly successful based on its $23 million budget. The original film grossed over $75 million at the box office and took in over $32 million in DVD sales.
Amazon Studios is producing six other comedy pilots to compete with Zombieland: Alpha House, Browsers, Dark Minions, Onion News Empire, Supernatural and Those Who Can’t.
