American Beagle Outfitters Joke Turns Real: Dog Clothing Will Debut Holiday 2014

American Eagle Outfitters has confirmed that its April Fool’s Day joke of creating a fashion line for dogs called American Beagle Outfitters will become a reality.

Customer response and demand was so overwhelming to the ploy that the company has decided to release a limited edition line of dog clothing for the Holiday 2014 season.

The American Beagle Outfitters collection will be available in American Eagle stores and online during the holidays this year.

American Eagle Outfitters Chief Marketing Officer, Michael Leedy, said, “We originally felt that April Fools’ Day was the perfect opportunity for us to engage with our consumers in a fun, lighthearted way, all while supporting the ASPCA.”

“Due to the tremendous positive response and excitement from our customers for the American Beagle Outfitters line, we decided to make a limited edition collection for Holiday 2014,” he continued.

Last month, American Eagle Outfitters released an announcement saying the brand was launching a matching line of clothing for dogs in a venture dubbed American Beagle Outfitters.

Although there were plenty of humorous pictures of dogs dressed in matching ensembles with their owners, many were led to believe it was an early April Fool’s Day joke.

Customers could sign up for a waiting list and receive a coupon, plus $1 from each purchase would benefit The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).

American Eagle Outfitters met its goal of raising $100,000 to support the ASPCA, the company said.

Customers can still donate to the ASPCA through the American Beagle Outfitters site or www.aspca.org.

Dog owners can also submit photos of their dogs showing off their personal style to #AEOStyle for an opportunity to be featured on American Eagle’s website.

To view the American Beagle Outfitters collection of dog fashion or the “dogumentary” about the making of the line, shoppers can visit ae.com/dogs.
