Another Major Egg Recall Underway, Affecting Prepared Foods

Approximately 150,000 pounds of eggs are being recalled in 34 states due to the potential of Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

Minnetonka, Minnesota, based Michael Foods initially announced the recall on January 26, the expanded the recall to include additional lots today. In a statement, Michael Foods said they decided to expand the recall after an investigation found “… a specific repair project that took place in the packaging room as the likely source of the contamination. The company has taken a number of corrective steps to address the issue and prevent recurrence.” The packaging room they refer to is at their Wakefield, Nebraska, plant.

Michael Foods is a wholesaler. The hard cooked eggs were stored in brine and sold in 10 and 25 pound pails to other food distributors and manufacturers. They, in turn, used the hard cooked eggs in the manufacturing of other foods and dishes. The eggs were distributed in 34 states, AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MI, MN, MO, MS, MT, NC, ND, NE, NJ, NV, OH, OK, OR, PA, SC, TN, TX, UT, WA, WI, WV. They were sold under the brand names Columbia Valley Farms, GFS, Glenview Farms, Papetti’s, Silverbrook, Wholesome Farms.  and bear the lot codes of 1 LOT 1350W through 1 LOT 2025W, with expiration dates ranging from 1/30/2012 to 3/10/2012.

Some of the prepared dishes which may have been made with the recalled eggs as an ingredient, and are also subject to a recall include:

Kroger: 5 lb. Deli Country Potato Salad, RW and Bakers Country Potato Salad in Dillons, Baker’s, Gerbes and Food4Less Fremont stores.

From Super1Foods: 3 lb. Deli Fresh Gourmet Mustard Potato Salad, batch 3/19/12 and UPC 00718129010038.

18th Street Deli of Hamtramck, MI: Julienne salad products with turkey, ham and hard-cooked eggs distributed to retail stores in Michigan and vending companies in Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.

Brookshire’s Food & Pharmacy:  Brookshire’s Brand 1 lb Southern Mustard Potato Salad, batch 3/19/12 with the UPC 00092825145257; Deli Fresh Gourmet Mustard Potato Salad 3 lb, batch 3/19/12 with the UPC 00718129010038); Brookshire’s Brand 3 lb Southern Mustard Potato Salad, batch 3/19/12 with the UPC 00092825145219.

Additional products may be identified. Michael Foods and the FDA stated that there are currently no reports of illness related to the recalled eggs.

A Listeria monocytogenes outbreak from contaminated cantaloupes sickened 133 people and led to 29 deaths last fall.
