Apple iTV Undergoing Trials

The highly anticipated smart HDTV from Apple is in a trial production run, according to WantChinaTime.com.

The Taiwan based English news site from the China Times News Group said “insider sources” told China Business News that Apple supplier Foxconn has received an order from Apple to produce the Apple TV on a trial basis.

Rumors concerning an Apple smart TV have been growing. The first rumor to really make waves was a February report of a prototype model being track a user moving about a room for use in video calls.

The name of the new TV has also been bantered about. Some have speculated that the device will be called an iPanel… but in May, an Apple supplier may (it came from a translated script) have referred to it as an iTV.

Gene Munster, an analyst for Piper Jaffray, is predicting a December, 2012, launch for the Apple TV, according to Fortune . Munster also suggests it will sell for between $1,500 to $2,000 and be available in sizes from 42 inches to 55 inches.

December seems like a late launch for an item that may be on many big-ticket wishlists for the holidays. But if Apple builds anticipation for the TV ahead of its actual launch, many shoppers might just hold off on other big ticket items to get the TV just before Christmas. Besides, if it launches in December, there will still be plenty of time after Christmas to pick one before Super Bowl XLVII (February 3, 2013).
