Apple Tracking Down iPhone 4S Battery Drain?

As we reported here last week, a number of iPhone 4S owners have been complaining of short battery life on their new Apple smartphones.

Attempting to track down the problem with the battery, Apple contacted some of the owners that were experiencing the issue, asking them about usage and having them install a program on their phones to help analyze what was happening.

Apparently Apple believes they may have found the problem and it’s related to their new iOS 5. “A small number of customers have reported lower than expected battery life on iOS 5 devices. We have found a few bugs that are affecting battery life and we will release a software update to address those in a few weeks,” Apple said earlier today.

While the majority of those reporting short battery life have been iPhone 4S owners, some have also been iPad and iPhone4 owners who have upgraded to IOS 5, so it makes sense that the issue may be related to the new operating system.

Gizmado published an article with a list of ‘tweaks’ to deal with the short battery life some are experiencing. They report that there is “a ton of software action going on that’s taxing your battery, hard.”

According to AppleInsider.com, Apple has released a beta-version of iOS 5.0.1, with a fix for the battery drain, to developers for testing purposes.
