Argo: Iranian Escape Thriller Based On Real Life, Hits Theaters Oct 12

Ben Affleck’s new movie, “Argo” opens October 12.

The film is based on the true story of six Americans who escaped from Iran during the hostage crisis of 1979.

The six consular employees hid at the Canadian ambassador’s residence for three months.  In real life, the Canadians’ role was crucial.  Much to Canadians’ dismay, the cinematic version trims their role considerably.

The American house guests were rescued by  CIA operatives posing as Hollywood film producers. Each of the escapees was given a fake identity and a fake film job. The faux movie was called “Argo”, a reference to the mythic ship that Jason and the argonauts used to nab the golden fleece.

Ben Affleck directs and stars as CIA man Antonio Mendez.  The real Mr. Mendez was as a technical adviser on the film. Actors John Goodman (make up artist John Chambers) and Alan Arkin (producer Lester Siegal) add humor and grounding to this political thriller.

Antonio Mendez and Matt Baglio have written a book about the rescue.  The hardcover book, ” Argo: How the CIA and Hollywood Pulled off the Most Audacious Rescue in History” is currently available at Amazon and Barnes & Noble for $16.04.
