Arsenic In Apple Juice? FDA Says It’s True – But Not What You Think

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a report in regards to the safety of apple juice in response to a recent fear inducing episode of the “Dr. Oz Show.” During the episode, Dr. Oz claimed that his team had tested several widely popular brands of apple juice, and that they had discovered the following: “American apple juice is made from apple concentrate, 60 percent of which is imported from China,” Oz stated. “Other countries may use pesticides that contain arsenic, a heavy metal known to cause cancer.”

The FDA quickly responded to clear up the mass state of panic due to Dr. Oz’s findings, explaining to the public that there are two types of arsenic. The first type of arsenic, organic, is highly common and can be found in both food and water, and can be ingested and passed through the body without causing any harm at all. The second type of arsenic, inorganic, is a kind found in pesticides. Organic arsenic can be found in apple juice, not the harmful inorganic variety that Dr. Oz claimed.

According to reports, “The FDA also ran tests on the same brands of apple juice that Dr. Oz tested and found significantly lower levels than he reported finding.”

Dr. Oz failed to explain the difference between the harmful inorganic arsenic, from the non-harmful organic type. The FDA issued the talk show host a letter of warning, but at the moment, Dr. Oz has yet to back down.

Stephanie Yao, an FDA spokesperson, told the Washington Post, “We’re concerned that people are going to start thinking their juice is unsafe when that’s not the case.”

Dr. Oz has is currently being accused of fear-mongering by the FDA.
