AT&T has been expanding their 4G LTE network hand over fist.
New cities added just this last week and a half include:
Shelton, CT; Salem, OR; Linglestown, PA; Ocean City and Leonardtown, MD; Port Townsend, Longview, Camano and North Whidby Islands, WA; Asheville and Goldsboro, NC; Casa Grande, AZ; Culpepper and Roanoke, VA; Dover, DE; Santa Cruz and Ventura-Oxnard, CA; and Anderson and the Outer Banks of SC.
Shortly after the announcement of the expansion into these new areas, Consumer Press interviewed an AT&T spokesperson to learn more about how current customers can connect to and start using the new LTE service.
CP: For AT&T customers in these regions – do they have to do anything different to connect to the 4G network, or is it automatic?
“A customer needs a compatible device and can keep their same plan and monthly charge. They will need to work with one of our reps to make sure their account shows that they’re on a 4G LTE plan and compatible device so they can connect properly, and that’s typically an automatic process when they upgrade their device.”
CP: How can they tell when they are on 4G?
If you’re using a compatible device, the network indicator will show either a “4G” symbol or a “4G LTE” symbol or network connection.
CP: What will be the main difference for users when they are on the 4G network?
The main difference is faster speeds. 4G LTE speeds are up to 10 times faster than 3G speeds, and AT&T 4G LTE is the nation’s fastest 4G LTE network. Since AT&T offers two 4G technologies that work together for customers: HSPA+ with enhanced backhaul and LTE, customers will have access to fast speeds as they move in and out of 4G LTE areas. Customers of some competitors who do not have HSPA+ with enhanced backhaul see a steep drop-off in speeds when they move out of LTE areas.
