It was recently announced that Benedict Cumberbatch was cast as the tiger, Shere Khan, in Andy Serkis’ version of “The Jungle Book.” This film is due to arrive in theaters October 2016.

This production is Serkis’ movie directing debut, he is most well-known for his CGI work in various other movies. His biggest role is the voice of Gollum in the Lord of the Rings trilogy as well as The Hobbit.

Cumberbatch worked with Serkis on The Hobbit as the dragon Smaug, and is also well-known for his work as the detective Sherlock Holmes on the series “Sherlock.”

Shere Khan is the wicked tiger who sees the protagonist Mowgli as his enemy. It has been said that this version of the Jungle Book will be very dark, possibly with this tiger taking on a bigger role.

Another movie version of this classic tale is set to come out just a year before this one, and features Idris Elba as Shere Khan.

However, both versions will have to compete with the 1967 Disney version, which included George Sanders as the tiger and is by far the most famous adaptation.
