Call Of Duty: MW3, Rakes In $775 Mil In 5 Days!

Activision, the publishers of Call Of Duty: MW3, announced yesterday that the first person shooter action game “broke theatrical box office, book and video game sales records for five-day worldwide sell-through in dollars.”

Within five days of its worldwide release, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, had sales of over $775 million. Robert Kotick, CEO, Activision Blizzard, said that “Call of Duty has become the first entertainment property in history to set five-day launch records for three consecutive years across all forms of entertainment.” In 2010, Call of Duty: Black Opps set the previous record for the largest entertainment launch at $650 million, breaking the record set in 2009 by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

According to GfK Chart-Track, which monitors sales of music, video and software, the number of units sold between last year’s Black Ops and this year’s MW3 is about the same, but MW3 has higher revenue earnings. That is due to Black Ops being heavily discounted as it launched into a weak economy. Though the economy remains anemic, MW3 has been able to maintain a higher retail price.

GfK Chart-Track also pointed out that MW3 is “outselling the opening weekend box office of the last four Harry Potter films combined.”

Revenue wise, game sales appear to be beating out the box office overall. Compared to the $775 million MW3’s brought in over its first 5 days, The Dark Knight, which is the highest revenue earning movie over 5 days, brought in $203 million. The incredibly popular Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, brought in $202 million in its first 5 days.
