Conspiracy Charges Added In Afghan Killings

Five U.S. soldiers, already charged with the murder of three Afghan civilians, have now been charged with the conspiracy to commit premeditated murder, and drug abuse.

The five soldiers who have been charged are Pfc. Andrew Holmes, Spc. Adam Winfield, Spc. Michael Wagnon, Spc. Jeremy Morlock and Staff Sgt. Calvin Gibbs. All of the soldiers are from the 5th Stryker Brigade.

They were all charged with murder in June after allegedly killing the civilians near the Forward Operating Base Ramrod in Afghanistan’s Kandahar province. Holmes and Winfield are accused of killing civilians Gul Mudin and Mullah Adahdad  by grenade and rifle in January and May respectively. Wagnon however is accused of shooting Marach Agha in February. Morlock and Gibbs were charged with three counts of murder and one charge of assault, on the same victims.

The military added the additional charges of conspiracy and wrongfully using a Schedule I controlled substance after a probe of the incident.

The probe also led to charges being filed against seven other soldiers from the same brigade.

Staff Sgt. Robert Stevens, Sgt. Darren Jones, Cpl. Emmitt R Quintal, Staff Sgt. David Bram, Pfc. Ashton A. Moore, Spc. Adam Kelly and Spc. Corey Moore all face  lesser charges related to the same incident.
