It was an exciting night on HBO Pay Per View Boxing. We saw Miguel Cotto take on Sergio Martinez in the main event, and three televised undercard bouts.
Andy Lee (32-2, 22 KO) vs John Jackson (18-1, 15 KO):
Fighting at 154 lbs, Andy Lee saw a rough start to this bout, with a knockdown in Round 1. However he came back with an impressive one-punch knockdown in Round 5, leaving Jackson on the canvas. Lee improves his record to 33-2 with 23 knockouts, and brings himself closer to a possible future title fight.
Jorge Melendez (28-3-1, 26 KO) vs Javier Maciel (28-3, 20 KO):
The original lineup for this 10 round bout was supposed to Yuri Foreman fighting in place of Javier Maciel. With just three weeks notice, Maciel stepped up and got the majority decision win in this surprisingly interesting match up. Melendez made the fight harder on himself by continually hit low and after two warnings, lost a point. Melendez improves his record to 29-3 with 20 knockouts.
Marvin Sonsona (18-1-1, 15 KO) vs Wilfredo Vasquez Jr (23-3-1, 19 KO)
This was an odd fight. As far as the action goes, it didn’t hold my attention very well. Vasquez Jr suffered a knockdown in the first round, but that went for nothing in Round 6 when a point was taken from Sonsona for an illegal punch. An accidental headbutt in Round 7 had Sonsona in a considerable amount of pain, but the fight went on. From there it went back and forth, and a couple times I though I was watching an MMA fight. However after 10 rounds, Sonsona pulled off a split-decision win.
Main Event:
Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31 KO) vs Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 38 KO)
In this much anticipated main event, we finally get past the pre-fight complaining and exchanging of words from both camps, and get down to what its all about: the fight. And what a start to the fight it was!
Cotto started out strong – looking as strong as he’s been in a long while. And that strength led to three – count them THREE – knockdowns in the first round. I don’t know what Martinez came to do, but it’s quite evident that Cotto came here to fight.
Cotto continued to dominate, with Martinez barely catching up in the middle rounds, even maybe taking Round 5. Martinez suffered yet another knockdown in Round 9, and in between rounds the corner stopped the fight.
Miguel Cotto is now the Middleweight Champion of the World, and had the performance of his career. There is no doubt that the legend is back to his old ways. I can’t wait to see what’s next in his career.
