Deadline is reporting that the movie/TV adaptation of Stephen King’s ‘Dark Tower’ series has been passed on by Universal Pictures. Directed by Ron Howard, the series was planed to alternate with three movies and two TV seasons and would have been the first of its kind.
This is not the first report of trouble for ‘The Dark Tower’, as Universal pushed the start date back from this summer to February 2012. It is claimed that this was done to reduce cost. Recently the studio was given a chance to read Akiva Goldman’s script for the first film and the beginning of the TV series, which was to air on NBC Universal. Rumor has it that Universal would only commit to the first movie because of the high cost of making these films.
This is not the first ambitious film that Universal has decided to pass on. Last year they dropped the Guillermo del Toro adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s story ‘At The Mountains of Madness’ because the budget was too high for them to allow del Toro the R rating he desired.
The Dark Tower is a seven part book series which follows the tale of Roland Deschain, the last of a knightly order of Gunslingers. The books follow Roland’s quest through a Wild West-esq world to find the Dark Tower, which is the axis upon which all the different universes spin, and stop the Crimson King from destroying it.
There is no news yet on what will happen to the project now. Rumors suggest that Warner Bros. may pick it up.
