BeautifulPeople, an exclusive dating site, has booted out 30,000 members that were considered ugly. These members slipped in under the radar as a result of a computer virus that attacked last month.
The dating site prides itself on matching only the best-looking people. Existing members select or reject prospective members during a 48-hour voting system, in keeping with the site’s catchphrase, “Beauty is in the eyes of the voter”. This screening process involves quizzing prospective members about different aspects of their lives, including looks, height, body shape, possessions, hobbies and much more. Members then pay $25 a month to be matched with other beautiful people on the site.
A virus, apptly named Shrek, allowed members to be confirmed without going through the screening and voting process. The company started getting suspicious when thousands of not-so-good looking people were admitted by the dating site as members over a six-week period. Most of these “ugly” people were on a free-trial, but the company has had to refund 4,500 people who had paid the $25 monthly fee. A total of $112,500 has been paid out.
Hodge flippantly admits “We have sincere regret for the unfortunate people who were wrongly admitted to the site and who believed, albeit for a short while, that they were beautiful. It must be a bitter pill to swallow, but better to have had a slice of heaven then never to have tasted it at all.”
According to Greg Hodge, Managing Director of BeautifulPeople, the source of the virus could have been a disgruntled ex-employee. Investigations are still in progress.
