Death Star Project Kicks Off On Kickstarter

Death Star Project Kicks Off On Kickstarter

Even though the U.S. government denied a petition to build a Death Star, Star Wars fans are not deterred.

A Kickstarter campaign has been created with the goal of building a Death Star using open-source software.

The campaign is commonly referred to as the Open Source Death Star project. The fundraising goal of the project is £20,000,000 (approximately $31.4 million USD) – and this would only cover “more detailed plans and enough chicken wire to protect reactor exhaust ports.”

Currently the design is simply a circle.

The final goal of the campaign is £543,000,000,000,000,00 ($850,000,000,000,000,000 USD). This amount would provide full funding to build a Death Star.

The amount of money required makes the success of the Open Source Death Star project seem far, far away – “almost impossible” to be exact. The only risk to the project is the power of the Force, while the challenge is proving “that this is a joke and not a serious project.”

The Open Source Death Star project has raised £206,647 ($324683.87 USD) in 3 days. With 52 days left to go in the campaign, this project just might work.

What makes this project really amusing is that people seem determined to make the Open Source Death Star a reality. If everyone donated the maximum amount of £5000 ($7856.50 USD), only 4000 backers would be needed to reach the fundraising goal.

What do you think the fundraisers will do if they reach their goal?

Would you donate to the Open Source Death Star Project?
