Hurricane Matthew will be bearing down on Florida over the next 2 days.
If you had plans to visit some of the Central Florida theme parks, here is some information you should know: Walt Disney World will close as of 5:00 tonight and will be closed all day Friday.
This includes all of its parks, including water parks, golf courses and ESPN World of Sports. Universal Studios Florida and it’s City Walk district will also be closed for the same period.
Disney has already evacuated their Ft. Wilderness Campgrounds. Halloween functions at both Disney and Universal have been cancelled for tonight and tomorrow. The Sea World Orlando website states that their park will also be closed on Friday as will Legoland in Winter Haven, FL.
As per the Walt Disney World Website, if you booked your trip through the Walt Disney World Travel Company, they will help you re-book your reservations. If you used a travel agent, you will need to work with them to re-book or make changes.
Southwest Airlines and Jetblue are allowing customers with flights in or out of Florida to change their plans at no additional charge. USA Today reported that there were 1500 flights cancelled for today out of Ft. Lauderdale, Miami and Orlando combined. You first step in making any vacation changes should be to call your airline carrier, then either you travel agent, if you used one, or to the resort directly if you didn’t.
It is highly unusual for theme parks to close due to weather, but this is the third time that this has happened. The last 2 were for Hurricane Jeanne in 2004 and for Hurricane Floyd in 1999.
Cruise Lines have also taken steps to either change itineraries to avoid the storm, or cancel a cruise completely. Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Norwegian have all announced itinerary changes to keep the boats further west and out of the hurricane’s path.
