With the theatrical release of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes 10 days away, early reviews are starting to roll in and a consensus is starting to form that this could be one of the summer’s can’t-miss movies.
The Hollywood Reporter calls it “A gripping account of interspecies conflict,” and then offers perhaps the highest praise of all, asserting that it belongs “in the annals of sequels, Dawn is to Rise of the Planet of the Apes what The Empire Strikes Back was to Star Wars — it’s that much better.”
SFX describes it as “confident, assured, muscular and moving in places,” adding that it “feels more human than many of the big studio films crowding cinemas.”
Film School Rejects recognizes “The humans are no afterthought in this film,” something that could not be said for recent releases Godzilla and Transformers: Age of Extinction, explaining that “every member of the species now facing extinction has personality, goals and stories of their own.”
These reviews and others paint the picture of a movie that’s well put together, will be loved by anybody that loves movies, and may actually warrant Oscar consideration. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes hits theaters in July 11.
