As the car market becomes filled with electric vehicles, bio-fuel vehicles, and hybrid vehicles, let us not forget those ever-so stylish sports cars. These “fire burners” often get poor gas mileage, but a few carmakers are setting out to change that.
Tesla, based in Silicon Valley, CA, has been producing the Roadster for about 3 years now. The Roadster is a totally electric, no emissions sports car. The Roadster accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds and has a top speed of 125 mph. The Roadster boasts 245 miles per full charge and fully charges in less than 4 hours at 240 volts and 70 amps.
Tesla isn’t the only carmaker looking to enter the electric vehicle craze on the sports car side of things. Delta Motorsport, a British-based company with US headquarters in Arizona, has been working on an electric sports car as well. The E-4 Coupe, expected to be in full production by mid-2012, was unveiled as an up and coming electric sports car.
The E-4 Coupe boasts a top speed of 150 mph and an acceleration of 0 to 60 in under 5 seconds. It seats 4 and meets European crashworthiness tests. It can run 200 miles on a full charge. The E-4 fully charges in 8 hours on 13 amps.
Jaguar is also looking to produce sports car. The company announced the start of production of the new C-X75 hybrid, which will reach top speeds of 200 mph and accelerate from 0-60 in only 3 seconds. The C-X75 hybrid will utilize a small internal combustion engine as opposed to the micro turbines used in the prototype, to power a generator that will supply each of the 4 electric motors with juice. Only 250 of these new sports cars by Jaguar will be built and are expected to be available for about $1 million each in 2013.
Just when electric cars are getting smaller and more popular as basic commuter cars, the sports car enthusiasts can joint the quest for cleaner, more efficient vehicles. Telsa, Delta Motorsports, and Jaguar may just be the beginning of an electric sports car revolution.
