eSalon’s Custom Hair Dye Colors – $10 Trial | How It Works

For those of us DIYers that like to do a lot of our primping and prepping at home for the convenience, and low cost, now we can get help from professional hair colorists, for a fraction of what professional salons normally charge.

For an introductory price of $10, eSalon will create a highly personalized, made-for-you permanent or demi-permanent hair dye. Let me warn you, however, that if you currently have henna or a metallic dye residue in your hair, this product may not be for you, as these dyes will change the intended results of eSalon’s individualized dye blend created for you.

The first bottle of dye costs $10 (with a 50% off discount), plus $4.95 shipping, if you sign up for automatic reorder every  3 to 12 weeks.  On reorders, you get 20%, or $4 off, the regular price of $19.99.  If you wanted to try the blend and not sign up for automatic reorders, the price is $24.95.  Or, if you wanted to change the frequency of reorders or cancel them, the website says you can do so at anytime.

According to the website, the company Color Director, Estelle Baumbauer, has 20 years’ experience as a colorist.  Her experience runs the gamut from Dessange in Paris, New York to Chloe and Marc Jacobs fashion shows in NY.

The company East Coast Style Ambassador, AJ Lordet, has worked with blonde supermodel Christy Brinkley and brunette Nina Garcia.

If you care about the ingredients in the eSalon dyes like I do, their website says that their demi-permanent color is ammonia-free.  The Permanent dye contains ammonium hydroxide.  “eSalon and other experts believe that ammonia is a safer choice than the substitutes some hair color companies use, such as Ethanolamine.  Both types of hair color contain PPD (p-Phenylenediamine), which may cause an allergic reaction in some people,” they state.

The product also contains these substances: such as Vitamins E, B, keratin, silk amino acid, soybean protein, aloe vera, chamomile, and wheat protein.

Your personalized profile is created when you answer a few questions.  You can also upload a picture of yourself, and send the company notes with your concerns and special requests.  My profile looks like this:

Profile Overview:

Coloring Treatments (Last 6 months): Permanent

Percentage of Gray 26% to 50%

Ethnicity: Asian

Chemical Treatments (Last 6 months): None

Last time your colored: 6-8 Weeks

Hair takes color: Resistant

How often do you dye: 6 weeks

Hairstyle & Length: Longer than Shoulder Length, Straight

With this personal profile, eSalon would craft my individually blended color of choice: Permanent – Darkest Brown – Red Mahogany.  Included in the package are personalized instructions for use, professional coloring accessories, 2 pair of gloves, packets of eSalon’s exclusive shampoo and conditioner, stain guard and stain remover.  According to the website, a personal colorist is available for phone and email consultation.

eSalon is also using the power social media to spread the word on their brand and products.  For every friend you invite that makes a purchase, the website will pay you $20.  If you were to refer a friend each time you reordered automatically, your dyes would practically be free.

In addition to personalized hair coloring, eSalon has a line of hair dying products.  They carry products like shampoo, conditioners, tinting brushes, touch up brush.

What do you think of this innovative service?  One of their users calls it, “Idiotproof,” according to their website.
