Expedia Announces New Travel Rewards Program

Expedia launched a new travel rewards program for its members yesterday. The new program provides members one to four points for every dollar they spend on flights, hotels, travel packages and other items through their site, Expedia.com.

According to an announcement released by Expedia, members can then use those points for flights on over 140 airlines, or on coupons for over 70,000 hotels, with no blackout dates or other restrictions. Members may earn double base points by booking flight and hotel together. Expedia Elite Plus members also earn an extra point on flight and hotel package deals.

As a special, Expedia is also giving members double base points when they book Expedia Special Rate hotels or hotel packages using a MasterCard, from now through August 31, 2011.

“Many other travel reward programs require you to lock into a single brand, but we don’t,” said Scott Durchslag, president of Expedia Worldwide. “That means that with Expedia Rewards you don’t have to be a point-optimizing road warrior to quickly earn free travel.”

Tim Winship, over at smartertravel.com, points out that “members earn points for the travel they book, no matter who actually travels. So there’s the potential to earn a significant number of points by booking trips for family and friends.”

Durchslag said of the new program: “More than two million travelers come to Expedia.com every single day. This program is one important way that we can thank our customers for their loyalty.”
