The Expendables 2 has a tough fight in earning the top earner mark for 2012. The new movie faces competition from The Dark Knight Rises, The Avengers, The Bourne Legacy and many others.
However, its opening weekend has been a true success. The Expendables 2 reached the top spot easily, earning $28.6 million, well more than the second place contender, The Bourne Legacy, which only earned $17 million.
What’s interesting is the fact that the new star-packed, action-packed, movie was shown at just 3,316 locations while The Bourne Legacy was shown at 3,753 locations. Specialists do not see this as a surprise, especially since The Bourne Legacy has such mixed reviews.
The top 5 income generating movies in US and Canada this weekend, according to Hollywood.com, were:
- The Expendables 2 – $28,591,370
- The Bourne Legacy – $17,057,385
- ParaNorman – $14,087,050
- The Campaign – $13,127,289
- Sparkle – $11,643,342
Other notable entries into the top 20 include Brave (16) and Total Recall (10).
The Expendables 2 has a huge following and that is a big part of the reason why the first weekend was such a box office hit. The star cast includes Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lungren, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Chuck Norris, Randy Couture, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis and Scott Adkins. The movie was directed by Simon West and had the screenplay written by Richard Wenk and Sylvester Stallone.
