A free trip to space is the prize being offered up by a new discount travel site.
The winner of the Tripalertz.com drawing will get a ride in the Lynx Mark I, to a height of 33 miles above earth. The flight will be piloted by an experienced space veteran, Colonel Rick Searfoss. Colonel Searfoss has been on the crew of three NASA space shuttle flights, twice as a pilot and once as a commander.
According to the site, the Lynx Mark I vehicle will surpass Mach 2 on it’s way to space. The rider will get to sit next to Colonel Searfoss and “experience weightlessness and take in a view of the earth only few have seen before.”
By signing up as a free member of the travel site, new members are automatically entered into the drawing. Members must be 21 to participate, and the drawing will be held on June 21, 2011.
Members receive additional entries into the contest by referring friends and spending money on the site. The winner is allowed to give the trip to a family member, friend, or charity, if desired. Certain restrictions apply, according to the site.
The Lynx Mark I is a two seat, suborbital, rocketplane that takes off and lands from a runway. It has been developed by California based XCOR. The space vehicle has four rocket engines that power it during the ascent. It then glides back to earth for an unpowered landing. The regular cost of a flight is $100,000, according to TripAlertz.
The award includes 5-nights at the Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort & Spa, in Paradise Valley, Ariz, while the winner undergoes training and preparation. Medical evaluations and screenings are required.
