Samsung Galaxy S2 smartphones, loaded with FreedomPop’s software for making free calls, are on sale through Groupon for $139.

The $139 cost is half off FreedomPop’s regularly advertised price.

We’ve been covering FreedomPop’s free cell phone service since it first launched in October of last year. The service works (see our review here), but is still very much in the beta stage and the quality of service depends greatly on a user’s location.

Their free plan includes 200 minutes of talk time, 200 texts, and a half a gigabyte of data.

They also offer paid plans for additional talk, texting and data. Unlimited talk and texting is $10.99/month. 2 GB of data is $19.99/month. 4 GB data costs $34.99/month.

The Samsung S2 in the deal is a refurbished model.

If you already have a qualifying phone, FreedomPop does offer a BYOP (Bring Your Own Phone) setup for those wanting to join their free plan. Phones do have to be designed for use on the Sprint network and only certain phones work with the service. FreedomPop offers a page for checking to see if a phone qualifies here.

No word yet on when they might have the Galaxy S3 or S4.
