Goodbye SkyDrive, Hello OneDrive!

Goodbye SkyDrive, Hello OneDrive!

In an official blog post, Microsoft announced that the new name used for the former SkyDrive brand will be OneDrive.

The company’s cloud storage service is not yet active under the new name but it is expected that this will happen soon.

The name change takes place as Microsoft had to drop the SkyDrive name following a law suit from Sky Broadcasting Group, the holder of a trademark for this exact name in Great Britain.

Microsoft was allowed “a reasonable period of time to allow for an orderly transition to a new brand” and that period seems to have passed.

OneDrive was chosen as a brand name “because it is one place for all documents and one place that is seamlessly connected across all devices”.

Former users of the SkyDrive or SkyDrive Pro accounts will now have OneDrive or OneDrive for Business accounts.

Those that are interested in knowing exactly when OneDrive will become fully operational can be notified as soon as the service is live by submitting their email address here.
