Grandfather Injured By Police In Black Friday Incident

A video has been posted on Youtube which shows a 54 year old man, identified as Jerald Allen Newman, lying bloodied, unconscious, and being handcuffed by police after a Black Friday scuffle at a Walmart store in Arizona.

According to witnesses, including the man’s wife, Newman and his grandson were looking at video games in the electronics section of the store when a Black Friday rush began, with shoppers tearing into boxes to get videos. The grandson was trampled, cutting his lip in the melee. The witnesses said the grandfather tucked several games he was holding in his waistband to free his hands so he could lift his grandson up. At that point, he was grabbed by police and thrown to the ground.

The video placed online does not show the scuffle nor the original police interaction. It starts with the man on the ground, being handcuffed, and then being rolled over, leaving a pool of blood on the ground, and with blood on his face. Police, with the help of bystanders, apply first aid.

During the video, bystanders can be heard cursing and asking the police “why’d you throw him down so hard?”.

Myfoxphoenix.com reported that local police consider the police action justified, noting that the video only shows the end of the incident. They did say the incident will undergo further investigation. Newman was taken to a hospital and treated, then taken into custody under charges of shoplifting and resisting arrest.
