Tumblr recently released what is labeled as a highly important security update for all iPad and iPhone users.
In a post on Tumblr Staff, the company announced:
“We have just released a very important security update for our iPhone and iPad apps addressing an issue that allowed passwords to be compromised in certain circumstances. Please download the update now.”
It seems like the security update is vital, although no information was released about the problems that actually exist.
We say this because Tumblr also advices iPad and iPhone users that utilize Tumblr apps to update the password. Everything goes one step further as it is also said that if the same password was used anywhere else, it should also be changed there as well.
After extra digging we found out that the problem was that the Tumblr app was actually sending the passwords as a clear text when running on iOS devices. That is definitely a huge problem and is no doubt why Tumblr is urging all Apple device users with Tumblr apps installed change their passwords as soon as possible.
The Android version of the app was not affected.
No serious problems have been reported related to the security problem to date, according to tumblr. But this is sure to hit Yahoo a little as it struggles on the market and has already spent over 1 billion dollars on Tumblr improvements.
