Book-sized packages armed with incendiary devices injured two postal room employees today at Maryland government buildings.
The first was at approximately 12:30 p.m. at the Jeffrey Building in downtown Annapolis. The package was addressed to Governor Martin O’Malley.
Approximately 15 minutes later, a package addressed to and opened at the Maryland Department of Transportation building in Hanover, 20 miles away, sent the package handler to the hospital with slightly-burned fingers. Several other employees in close proximity were also taken to the hospital.
A third suspicious package was discovered in Baltimore at a state office building, but it is not clear if it is related, and the office was not evacuated. It was discovered at the offices of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and was singled out as matching the other two packages.
No serious injuries were sustained in either incident, which were described by state police spokesman Greg Shipley as “a brief flash of fire, smoke and a smell.” Evacuations of both buildings interrupted more than 300 workers for several hours.
Mailrooms of state offices were quarantined statewide, and the investigation is assisted by the FBI’s joint terrorism task force. Homeland Security is aware and monitoring the situation.
