The social photo sharing app Instagram turned into an instant hit when it launched on Google play just over a week ago. According to the rather inexact stats on Google Play, there’ve been well over 5 million downloads of the app so far.
And over on the Apple App Store yesterday, Instagram for a time it’s was ranked as the #1 most popular download, according to a Tweet from Instagram.
Instagram was already a popular app. Some of the increasing interest is likely due to the launch of its Android version on Google Play. But much of the reason, and the increase in downloads in the Apple App Store, where has available for a year and a half now, may be due to Facebook purchasing the company that makes the app for $1 billion.
According to Instagram’s founder, Kevin Systrom, over 30 million Instagram accounts have been set up through the app.
