Instagram Expanding From Apps To Web

The popular photo sharing application Instagram is making the move to the web.

Announced Monday, Instagram will now allow users to view and edit their profiles through their website at Instagram.com. Previously users of the social media service had only been able to use the service through the applications on their Andriod, and iOS based phones.

Istagram, which is owned by Facebook Inc., currently has a more twitter-like appearance when the application is pulled up on your phone. You follow different users based on how much you enjoy their pictures, and you follow their posts in a chronological order. It is slightly cluttered, and occasionally can be difficult to change different aspects in your own profile.

This new online profile viewing service (which should be available later this week, or early next week) looks very similar to the current Timeline profile view on Facebook, is very clean, shows little text, and has no ads.

It will allow people to see their current posted pictures, add new friends, follow new people, and make it easier to edit profiles all from the web. What is missing is the ability to upload to your web profile from your PC. When asked about if this would be available Istagram stated: “Instagram is focused on the production of photos from mobile devices so users are not currently able to upload from the web. We’re excited about how Web Profiles will make it easier to browse and share content on the web for all our users.”

Also on located on the Instagram blog, are pictures of what the new profiles will look like when they are released later on this week, common questions that people may have, and how people will be able to locate their profiles online.
