iOS 8 Launch Today: What You Should Know

Today, iOS 8 will be available for download on Apple mobile devices.

iOS 8 is the latest major mobile operating system update from Apple. It maintains the same “flat” aesthetic introduced in iOS 7. However, the update with include many new features, including a time-lapse camera mode, a new ‘Quick-Type’ keyboard, Wi-Fi calling (iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus only), enhanced voice recognition with Siri, and much, much more.

Last year, when the launch iOS 7 was imminent, most Apple users were eager to get their hands on Apple’s new mobile OS. iOS 7 introduced an abundance of new features, as well as a completely redesigned user interface. In terms of aesthetic design, iOS 8 is really nothing new.

Aside from a few of the new features listed above, a lot of what iOS 8 has to offer involves integration with Apple’s new Mac OS: OS X Yosemite, which still doesn’t launch until later this fall.

One of the most talked-about new features of iOS 8 that will run alongside OS X Yosemite is ‘Continuity’. Devices connected to the same iCloud account will automatically sync app activity with each other, so that users can step away from one device and instantly pick up where they left off on another device. This feature is called ‘Handoff’.

Even though the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus do not launch until Friday, users can still download iOS 8 on their current devices today. Apple’s mobile OS updates usually become available at 10:00 am Pacific Time.

iOS 8 will be compatible with the iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 5S, iPhone 5C, and iPod Touch (5th generation), as well as with the iPad 2, iPad with Retina Display, iPad Air, iPad Mini, and iPad Mini with Retina Display.

The new iOS can be downloaded via iTunes, or directly onto devices via the ‘settings’ menu in iOS 7.
