For fans of the Mazda RX-7 and its unique rotary engine, it has been a long and sad period of depression, waiting and hoping for news of the brand’s return to the RX model.
Well, some news has reached ours ears; rumors have become a concept car – dubbed the RX-VISION.
Obviously it is a sports car that will be Wankel powered, but Mazda had taken the rotary engine and modernized it.
In the 80’s and 90’s, the RX engines were powerful high revving screamers; but they had a thirst for engine oil. That, of course, meant emission nightmares and occasional catastrophic failures.
Mazda has developed a new RX engine that integrates its SKYACTIV technology in an effort to curb these problems. The resulting engine has been designated the SKYACTIV-R.
Although there is no official or definite plan to use this engine, we have to ask why else would they bother building a concept car? Our hope is they plan on surprising us soon with the next gen RX.
If it does see the light of day, it will be a front engine, rear driven hooligan that will thrill even the greenest of eco-nuts.
In the meantime, here are some pictures to dream about.
