Lupita Nyong’o and Gwendoline Christie Join Star Wars Episode 7 Cast

The cast of Star Wars: Episode VII continues to grow with the addition Monday of recent Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o and Game of Thrones‘ Gwendoline Christie.

Much of the cast for Episode VII was revealed last month, but there were strong indications from director J.J. Abrams that casting was far from over.

The addition of Nyong’o shouldn’t be a surprise, as there were widespread rumors that she met with Abrams regarding a role in Star Wars soon after she took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in 12 Years A Slave.

Meanwhile, Christie is adding another big-time movie franchise to her resume, as she is already playing a role in the third and fourth installments of the Hunger Games series.

Which roles Nyong’o and Christie may be playing in Star Wars remains unclear, although there has been much speculation that Nyong’o could be playing the granddaughter of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Even if that’s true, there’s no telling how prominent of a role that might be in Episode VII.

The cast of Episode VII that was previously announced includes the original trio of Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford, as well as Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and the ageless Max von Sydow. Star Wars: Episode VII will open December 18, 2015.
