Mazda has decided to recall 65,000 Mazda 6 series cars due to spiderwebs dwelling in the evaporative canister vent line. According to the NHTSA, the massive recalls includes 2009 and 2010 year models of the Mazda6 due to a certain type of spider called the Yellow Sac spider.
This spider has found that the evaporative canister vent line is a suitable habitat for its particular species. According to Mazda, if the spider weaves a web, the fuel tank pressure may “become excessively negative when the emission control system works to purge the vapors from the canister.” Mazda says that extra stress on the fuel tank could cause a crack and dangerous fuel leaks.
The problem is being fixed by authorized Mazda dealers who will inspect and clean out the canister in the recalled vehicles. A spring will also be inserted to prevent the spider from entering the fuel line. The NHTSA has said, “This is one of the most bizarre cases ever to warrant a car recall.”
A Mazda representative said that currently there have been 20 customer complaints, all featuring the same Mazda6 model car. Mazda6 owners with questions can contact the company directly at 1-800-222-5500.
