Miami Hurricanes To Hire Jon Gruden?

Jon Gruden threw his name into the hat as the new head coach for the Miami Hurricanes after Randy Shannon was fired yesterday.

That’s according to Steve Gorten, of the Orlando Sun-Sentinel. He’s reporting that “former NFL coach Jon Gruden initiated contact with [Miami] to express his desire for the job and that the interest is mutual.”

Jon Gruden is currently a color commentator for ESPN’s Monday Night Football.

Before his job with ESPN, Jon Gruden was the head coach of the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He spent seven years at Tampa. In his first year, the Bucs made it to and won the Super Bowl. But he was unable to continue that success. He was fired in 2009. Before becoming the coach of the Tampa Bay Bucs, Jon Gruden was the head coach of the Oakland Raiders.

In May 2009, Gruden was hired by ESPN as an analyst on Monday Night Football, he also called the 2010 Rose Bowl, 2010 BCS National Championship Game on ESPN Radio.

The reported deal with the Miami Hurricanes would be worth roughly $3 million per season.

Update, Jon Gruden released a statement this evening, saying:

“I am committed to Monday Night Football and to ESPN. I enjoy working with Mike, Jaws and our entire crew and am just trying to get better at this job.”
