New B&N Nook eReader Will Include GlowLight

Barnes & Noble is coming out with a new version of their Nook Simple Touch eReader that will include a lit screen. It will be called the “Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight.”

While color eReaders and tablets have, in essence, backlit screens. Black-and-white (e-ink) eReaders do not. That makes them easier to read in bright light or sunlight, but hard to see in low light conditions, and impossible to read in the dark.

Nook-Simple-Touch-with-GlowlightBarnes & Noble has addressed this issue by placing light-emitting diodes along the inside of the screen’s frame. According to the company, the lights provide “a soft, adjustable glow” across the eReader’s screen.

In a statement, B&N said:

“GlowLight gives bedtime readers just the right amount of light for reading, without disturbing a sleepy spouse. Like having two Readers in one, the first and only Reader designed to let E Ink customers read in the dark is equally amazing at the beach, with a paper-like reading experience, even in the bright sun.”

They also said that the “Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight” has an extra long battery life, and that readers can use the device for a full month, with the light on, before the battery needs to be recharged.

Barnes & Noble said they plan to launch the “Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight” early next month, but did not provide an exact date. They are taking pre-orders through their site, http://www.barnesandnoble.com, and at their brick-and-mortar stores. The cost of the new device is $139.
