Jaguar Land Rover unveiled its ‘Jaguar Virtual Windscreen’ concept that will improve road and track driving.
This head-up display uses the entire windshield so the driver’s eyes never need to leave the road.
High quality hazard, speed and navigation icons can be projected up on the windscreen during normal driving conditions. Performance drivers will benefit from racing line and braking guidance, ghost car racing, and virtual cones while on the track.
“We are working on research projects that will give the driver better information to enhance the driving experience,” said Dr Wolfgang Epple, Director of Research and Technology for Jaguar Land Rover. “By presenting the highest quality imagery possible, a driver need only look at a display once. Showing virtual images that allow the driver to accurately judge speed and distance will enable better decision-making and offer real benefits for every-day driving on the road, or the track.”
Head-up displays are nothing new, however Jaguar is taking the technology further by integrating an advanced gesture control system to eliminate the need to look down for controls. Current smart phones detect a finger from 5mm away, but the system they are working with increases the range to around 15mm.
Jaguar Land Rover is also trying to replace rear view mirrors with cameras and virtual displays. Current two-dimensional imaging doesn’t work well as it is difficult to judge the distance and speed of other cars. Jaguar’s innovative 3D instrument cluster tracks the position of the driver’s head to feed each eye a slightly different angle of an image, creating the perception of depth.
