New Wii In 2012 – But We’ll Get To See It Before Then

Nintendo Co. Ltd. announced it will replace the Wii with a new system in 2012.  While details are not yet released, Nintendo will unveil “a playable model of the new system” on June 7, 2011, at the E3 Expo in Los Angeles.

The Wii was released in 2006; the use of hand and body movements was cutting edge at the time, resulting in demand that outpaced production capacity.  After selling over 86 million units, sales have slowed the past two years.  More recently the Wii has struggled to keep pace with the Sony Move and Xbox Kinect, released last fall.

Nintendo has removed the Wii systems from its financial forecast for the fiscal year ending March, 2012.
