Oscar For Oprah

CHAT show legend, Oprah Winfrey, is to receive an honourary Oscar.

The queen of TV will be honoured in November with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award as a reward for her tireless charity work.

She will be given the honorary award along with veteran actor James Earl Jones as a tribute to his career which has spanned more than 50 films.

Oprah, who has interviewed almost every famous person on the planet during her illustrious journalistic career, was nominated for a best supporting acress Oscar in 1985 for her role in the Colour Purple.

She has since done many voiceovers in films such as The Princess and the Frog, Bee Movie and Charlotte’s Web.

But it’s due to her charity work, setting up the Oprah Winfrey Foundation and the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, for which she will recieve the honorary Oscar.

Actor Jones, best known as the voice of Darth Vadar in the Star Wars films, also missed out on an Oscar 1971 for The Great White Hope. His other outstanding credits include Field of Dreams, Patriot Games and The Hunt for Red October.

Make up artist Dick Smith completes an honorary trio. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said the honorary awards are given to individuals for “extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or for outstanding service to the Academy.”
