Pacific Rim 2 Starts Shooting Late 2015; Pacific Rim 3 In Development

Guillermo Del Toro says that the first draft of the Pacific Rim 2 screenplay is complete. He states that pre-production starts in August 2015 and production in November.

In an interview with Collider, Del Toro teased character details for the sequel and proposed threequel.

“Some of your favorite characters come back, some others don’t, because we have decided that we’re gonna shoot ambitiously and say ‘let’s hope we have three movies.’ So some characters come in at that end of the second, hoping that it’ll ramp up on the third.”

Previous rumors pointed towards Charlie Day returning in an important role. Could he possibly be playing one of the returning characters, or will the new finished script leave him out?

Pacific Rim only made $101 million domestic, and almost didn’t make a profit, but Del Toro and Legendary Pictures are clearly banking on a long term and relevant Pacific Rim Franchise, with a 2017 release date for the sequel and an incoming animated series.

Are you excited for Pacific Rim 2? What do you think of the plan for a long lasting Pacific Rim franchise? Sound off in the comments.
