Recent British studies show that children who eat a lot of processed foods with refined sugars and saturated fats may have a lower IQ than children who are fed vitamin rich meals.

They stated that nutritious foods are particularly critical during the developmental years from birth to age 3, which is when the brain grows most rapidly.

Kate Northstone, lead researcher on the study summed it up for us: “We have found some evidence to suggest that a diet associated with increasing consumption of foods that are high in fat, sugar and processed foods in early childhood is associated with small reductions in IQ in later childhood.”

Northstone continued to say that children should always be taught the importance of a nutrition filled diet at an early age, and “…we know this is important for physical growth and development, but it may also be important for mental ability.”

The study, which was published on Feb. 7, the research team tested 3,966 children who were born between 1991 and 1992.

Parents of the children were questioned about the diets of the children, and the children were measured for IQ by the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, a standard test in the field.

“Fast and junk food seem like an easy and affordable option for busy parents, but defaulting to high-fat, high-sugar, high-calorie foods is putting their children’s health and future at risk,” Said Samantha Heller, dietician.
