In yet another setback for longtime fans of the popular Nintendo franchise Pikmin, Nintendo announced today during one of their trademark Nintendo Direct conferences that Pikmin 3 for the Wii U has been delayed to the second quarter of 2013.
That means the game will come out sometime between April and June of next year. No firm release date was set.
Prior to today’s announcement, Pikmin 3 was scheduled to release sometime during the Wii U’s launch window, or between the Wii U console’s debut on November 18, 2012 until March 31, 2013.
Nintendo executives gave no reason for the delay.
Though it was officially announced during Nintendo’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2012 conference, Pikmin 3 has been in development for many years. Originally, Pikmin 3 was slated for a Wii release, with developer Shigeru Miyamoto hinting at his interest in making the game for the Wii as far back as 2007. Nintendo even went so far as to confirm a new Pikmin game during a roundtable conference during their 2008 E3 presentation.
In case you missed out on previous entries to the Pikmin series, check out Nintendo’s official description of Pikmin 3: “Pikmin 3 is a fully reimagined, mass-action strategy title from the critically acclaimed Pikmin series. Players will discover a beautiful world filled with strange creatures and take command of a swarm of ant-like Pikmin trying to survive. The world is densely packed with treasures and enemies, which makes the game much more action focused and fills it with layers of potential strategies and paths, adding greater replayability to challenge modes.”
