Roberto Orci To Direct Star Trek 3

Weeks of speculation can end; it’s now official that Robert Orci will direct Star Trek 3, the still untitled sequel to last year’s Star Trek Into Darkness, which was written by Orci.

J.J. Abrams has directed the first two installments of the re-booted Star Trek series, but he will merely act as a producer on Star Trek 3, as he is busy being the director of Star Wars: Episode VII.

This will be Orci’s first foray into directing, and now that he’ll be stepping into the director’s chair, Orci will relinquish his duties as screenwriter.

After Orci wrote the first installment of the Star Trek series in 2009, as well as Into Darkness, the script for Star Trek 3 will be left up to J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay.

Plot details for the latest Star Trek are still unknown, but all of the principle actors from the first two movies are expected back, including Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, and Karl Urban.

Production is still in the early stages, so it’s possible that Star Trek 3 may not hit theaters until the summer of 2016, meaning we’ll have to wait two years to see Orci’s directorial debut.
