Sherlock: Series 4 Release Date Rumored for 2016

The release date for series 4 of British television’s Sherlock has been speculated for 2016.

The air date was previously rumored to be in December 2014.

The show’s writer and actor, Mark Gatiss (Mycroft), has confirmed there will be no more episodes for two years. The reason for this is probably the busy schedules of the show’s stars, Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) and Martin Freeman (Watson).

Though the news has left fans reeling, a two year gap in productions has been the regular schedule for the BBC Sherlock. Season 1 was aired in 2010, followed in 2012 with season 2. In 2014, season 3 was released. A Christmas mini-episode was also released over Christmas 2013 as a prequel to the first episode of season 3,  The Empty Hearse.

The show’s creators have teased a possible earlier release of 2015 as they continue to work on scripts, but no confirmed date has been set for Sherlock series 4. However, Mark Gatiss and fellow creator and writer Steven Moffat have confirmed plans for series 5.
