Skype Working On 3D Video Calls

Skype Working On 3D Video Calls

Skype recently turned 10 years old and the Microsoft owned service is looking towards the future.

According to Mark Gillett, Microsoft corporate vice president for Skype, 3D video calls might be the future.

In an official BBC interview, Gillett confirmed that the firm is currently working on such a project. He stated:

“We’ve seen a lot of progress in screens and a lot of people now buy TVs and computer monitors that are capable of delivering a 3D image. But the capture devices are not yet there. As we work with that kind of technology, you have to add multiple cameras to your computer, precisely calibrate them, and point them at the right angle.”

Enthusiasts need to be aware that technological problems are not the only ones that will be faced. 3D home technology has not really been well received by the public. ESPN will drop thier 3D channel by the end of the year and 3D HDTV sales are lower than expected.

Skype is giving away 30 minutes free with Skype WiFi as part of their 10 year celebration, which can be used in most public Wi-Fi locations in USA.
