Sony: PlayStation Outage Will Be A Few Days

In the wake of four new game launches, the Sony PlayStation online gaming site is down. According to the Sony blog, gamers can expect the site to be down for at least a day or two.

The outage on the PlayStation site has locked users out from playing many of the PlayStation games online, including the new releases. Sony had just released Mortal Kombat, Portal 2, SOCOM, and inFAMOUS 2’s beta version. A number of other network games have also been blocked.

Reportedly, Sony posted a message on their blog stating that they were looking into “the possibility of targeted behavior by an outside party.” They have since removed any reference to hacking.

Many gaming fans are toying with the idea that the outage is the work of hacker group Anonymous, who has claimed responsibility for the hacking of several Sony sites as well as sites like Amazon, MasterCard, Visa, and PayPal, in the past. Anonymous, however, has declined to take responsibility for this outage. Even so, the rumors are still circulating through fans’ comments on the Sony blog.

Sony engineers considered previous attacks by Anonymous to be more of a nuisance than anything else. The previous attacks didn’t shut entire sites down. Sony says they are working on the problem, but gamers are not happy about the timing of the outage.
