Spotify Replaces ‘Music Unlimited’ On Sony Devices

Sony has announced that it will be closing its Music Unlimited service and replacing it with a Spotify-powered app called Playstation Music.

Nearly two and a half years since we covered the release of Sony’s Music Unlimited service on Android devices, the gaming and technology company is dropping support for its on-demand music streaming service.

Playstation Music will be available on Playstation 3 and 4 consoles, as well as Xperia tablets and smartphones. Music Unlimited will no longer be available after March 19, 2015.

Spotify, the service behind Playstation Music, has a global reach of more than 60 million listeners and advertises a music database of “millions of songs.” This is the first time Spotify has been supported on a game console.

However, there’s a caveat: Playstation owners will need to pay for the “Premium” Spotify membership in order to utilize the service on their game consoles. The service costs $9.99 and is offered with a 30-day free trial. Sony has stated that subscribers to Music Unlimited will receive free service from February 28 through to the March cancelation date.

Let’s just hope that Playstation Music receives a better reception than its predecessor, which was frequently criticized for its limited capabilities. At least this time around, we’ll be able to play our own music in-game.

What do you think of the switch?
