The cost to mail out that bill is increasing from 44¢ to 45¢ starting today. Prices on other USPS services are also on the way up.
It seems like the price of stamps just went up not too long ago, but in reality its been 2 1/2 years. The rate that the post office is allowed to raise basic mailing prices by is tied to inflation.
The cost for mailing a postcard is increasing to 32¢, that’s up 3¢ from the previous price. 1 ounce letters headed to Canada or Mexico are now 85¢, an increase of 5¢. Other letters headed to international destinations are now $1.05, up 7¢.
The USPS is also increasing the price of some Priority and Express mail services, though some shipments to nearby locations are decreasing. The new price for an Express Mail Flat Rate Envelope will now be $18.95.
It’s no secret that the USPS has been struggling with revenue – last year it reported a $5.1 billion loss.
Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe said of the price increase: “The overall average price increase is small and is needed to help address our current financial crisis. We continue to take actions within our control to increase revenue in other ways and to aggressively cut costs.”
Non-denominated ‘Forever Stamps’ bought before the 1¢ increase will continue to be good for use without adding an additional 1¢ stamp, but from here on out it will cost more to buy them.
