Supernatural: Back in Black

Dean Winchester is Back in Black.

Last night’s season 10 premiere of Supernatural gave the first look at Dean Winchester’s new life.

Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) and Crowley (Mark Sheppard) have teamed up for the beginning of the season, but things are already getting rocky between the two of them. Dean isn’t any regular demon; he’s a demon with the Mark of Cain, and he’s having the time of his life. Crowley wants to move to bigger and better things, including creating a new Hell with his new sidekick. Dean, on the other hand, is having too much fun drinking booze, singing in bars, and hooking up with women everywhere. He’s dangerously without a care in the world, something that Crowley hadn’t quite anticipated.

Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki) ended season 9 believing that his brother was dead. However, upon returning to an empty room and a note from Dean, Sam went on a hunt. After seeing Dean’s eyes turn black in a security tape, Sam was convinced that his brother’s corpse was possessed, a theory that was quickly set straight during a conversation with Crowley.

Sam was able to trace the call to Crowley and began to make his way to North Dakota. While dealing with car trouble, Sam was kidnapped and held hostage by someone from Dean’s past, seeking revenge. Dean spoke with Sam’s captor on the phone; he expressed his lack of concern for Sam’s safety. He claimed that if Sam was in that situation, it was his own fault and his own responsibility to get himself out of it.

Castiel (Misha Collins) is losing his stolen grace, fast. It seems that his draining grace is less about his return to humanity, and more about his upcoming death. The loss of his grace is killing him, not returning him to a human form. A familiar angelic face, Hannah (Erica Carroll) has partnered up with Castiel, hoping to restore organization and order to the garrison.

Overall, the premiere was almost purely expositional, which made it boring at times, but necessary. This season is fully engrossed in the lack of relationship between the brothers, something we haven’t yet seen before. Dean genuinely doesn’t give a damn about his brother, the brother he died for on multiple occasions, which leaves an opportunity for deep exploration.
